The new Knife & Saw site has launched

New Site
Hello all,

I am happy to announce that after a year of what was supposed to be a temporary site, I have finally had some time to work on the official Knife & Saw website and it launched this weekend and is ready for public viewing.

With the new site, it should be much easier for you to see my work, learn more about Knife & Saw and find out how to purchase Knife & Saw products. I hope you find this to be the case. The blog portion of the site will still exist, but will now be found at this address. If you have a minute, I hope you can check it out.

Thanks and hope you are all well,
Chris

Thanks

I found out this weekend that the Bike Shelf won 2 awards at the Dwell on Design Conference Modern World Awards. It won in the “Play” category and it also took home the overall People’s Choice Award. You can see the Bike Shelf accepting its award above.

I just wanted to thank Dwell first of all for putting me in the magazine and then nominating me for this award. It is very flattering to even be considered along side these great designers and their products, let alone to be chosen for the award. Even more flattering is to be chosen by all of you for the People’s Choice award. Thank you so much to all of you who voted for me and spread the word, as well as for your overall support. It means a lot. I hope I can continue to make work that you enjoy and follow.

Thanks again to you and congrats to all of the other designers who were nominated as well, there are some great designs out there well worthy of the awards.

No more waiting…

Please go here for the most updated information and purchasing options for The Bike Shelf. This site you are currently on is no longer being updated, there is a new Knife & Saw website

I have some great news on the waiting time for the Bike Shelf. I am finally getting help with production and will have a large run finished in 4-6 weeks… hopefully more on the 4 week side. From this point on, if you order a Bike Shelf, you will be shipped one come end of July. And, from that point on, if you order and pay for a Bike Shelf, you will be shipped one immediately.

I know there are some of you that have been waiting for a while already and I apologize for that but I have had many orders and only 2 hands unfortunately. I hope you understand. For those of you already on the list, you should have been sent an email about payment and you will be top priority once the Shelves are finished. If you did not receive an email, it is most likely because your email was input improperly in the form, or perhaps my email was sent to your spam folder.

For the rest of you who would like to put in orders now, please go here to make payment and you will be shipped out your Bike Shelf as soon as it is ready.

Thanks again for all of your interest in the Bike Shelf and the patience of many of you who have been waiting.

-Chris

Bike Shelf & DWR

Hello all. I wanted to let you know about some exciting news regarding the Bike Shelf. A few weeks ago, the Bike Shelf went on display at 10 Design Within Reach stores around the country. At stores in Austin, Berkeley, Cambridge, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, New Orleans, Portland and Scottsdale, the Bike Shelf is holding up a bike from DWR Founder Rob Forbes’ new bike company, Public Bikes. I’m honored to be in the company of such great designers and furniture at these stores, and I think the Bike Shelf and Public Bikes look great together. If you are near any of these stores and would like to check out the Bike Shelf in person, you should stop by. They are not being sold through DWR, please still contact me directly if you are interested.

For more information, check out the DWR Blog.

Bike Shelf up for Dwell Modern World Award

Please go here for the most updated information and purchasing options for The Bike Shelf. This site you are currently on is no longer being updated, there is a new Knife & Saw website

The Bike Shelf has been chosen as a finalist in the first ever Dwell Modern World Awards. The winners will be announced at this years Dwell on Design conference on June 24th. I am very honored to be even mentioned in the same context as the other designers in my category, let alone up for this award. If you have a minute, take a look at the other finalists and if you think the Bike Shelf should win, please vote for it. It is in the “Play” category.

Here is some info on the Awards:

“We are proud to announce the first ever Modern World Awards and Ceremony this year at Dwell on Design. Every day we scour the wide world of design for the best products, objects, and furniture for our magazine and website. And now we are very happy to stamp our seal of approval on our favorite 25 designs from the last year and a half at the first Modern World Awards exhibit and Ceremony.

The awards will be handed out in a special presentation at Dwell on Design at 5:00 on June 24th. If you can’t make it, don’t fret. The 25 designs will be exhibited on the show floor throughout the three days of Dwell on Design.

Taken directly from the pages of Dwell, the five finalists we’ve selected in in five different categories best encompass our take on how the modern world, and how good design improves it. Whether at work or play, at rest or on the go, these are the designs that matter most. As usual, we’re looking for innovation, clever use of materials, sustainable design, and that je ne sais quois that makes us say, “I gotta get one of those.”

Thanks,
Chris

Coffee at 10 degrees

A friend approached me a while back about making her a coffee table. Then I had two children… my son and a Bike Shelf. So, luckily she was patient and after a bit of a wait, I finally got her the table she had been waiting for.

Bike Shelf Update

Please go here for the most updated information and purchasing options for The Bike Shelf. This site you are currently on is no longer being updated, there is a new Knife & Saw website

Hello all. I have been getting lots of emails, so I just wanted to update people on the current status of ordering Bike Shelves. For all of you who have made an order already by filling out the online form, you should have been contacted by me. If not, please mail me and let me know. For the rest of you, here’s the deal…

Demand has been really high for these and I am at the moment still making all of these by myself. Although a good problem to have, for those of you who want a shelf right away, it is a problem none the less. All of you have been super patient, so thank you for that. So, the plan from here on out is that if you would like to order a shelf, just know that the current lead time is around 12 weeks, give or take. If you are ok with this, then go ahead and fill out the form. Because I have other projects that I have been putting off, and interest from some of you in custom pieces, I will also be limiting the number of shelves I make in the future. After I fulfill the current orders to date, I will only be making 10 or so shelves per month. Your order will be taken in the order it was received. When you put in an order, I will contact you and let you know an estimated date for completion. I will also most likely update this site if I have openings in the current batch for orders, or decide to get help making these, thus speeding up the process. So, if you would like to stay updated, please subscribe to this blog (on right hand column). I promise you that your inbox won’t be full of emails from me.

Thanks again for all of your interest, kind words about the shelf and patience. Hope you all are well.

-Chris

New Space

After many months of Derek at Council being nice enough to let me rent out some of his space to help start Knife & Saw, I finally found a new (and permanent) space to call home. I will be forever grateful to Derek for his part he played in the birth of Knife & Saw, but now starts the next chapter. Some friends (Celia and Dan) at Tree To Table were nice enough to accomodate me and my Bike Shelf operation and have invited me to share some of their beautiful space with them. If you are ever looking for some beautiful pieces of Claro or Bastogne Walnut that Dan is constantly milling, or some furniture made from it, you should definitely contact them.

For all of you who have put in an order for a Bike Shelf, I have your order and am working every day to get it finished for you. There has been a lot of demand and still one of me, so it takes a little time. I hope it is well worth it when it finally arrives.

And lastly, thank you to Dwell for including me in the current issue. Check it out if you have a chance.

Re-Cycle

I am always looking for ways to reduce my waste on projects by finding ways to use scrap. There isn’t always a great solution because scraps by definition are usually unusable cutoffs that tend to be small and oddly shaped. When making the Bike Shelves, I end up with a lot of strips of nice Walnut from trimming various parts of the shelves. Since I love to cook and strips were the perfect cutoff, the best possible use of these seemed to be cutting boards. Read More.

Stacks o’ Shelves

I finished up another batch of shelves a week or so ago and have been shipping them out. It’s definitely been keeping me busy, a little too busy. I’ve been putting off some other projects since the Bike Shelf madness, most notably a project for a good friend.

So… Because of this, and the holidays, I am going to put off the next batch of shelves until January. If you would like to order a shelf, the way to do it is still to just email me at cbrigham@gmail.com. Just let me know which version you would like and give me your shipping info. I will get you on the list for the next batch and let you know when I think it will be done. When I get closer to completion, I will ask you for payment. I am also going to be making a couple shelves made from Maple. These will sell for $285.

I hope you are all well and thank you to everyone who has sent me such nice email about my work, as well as posted about it various places. It is very much appreciated. Hope you have a nice holiday.

In the shop…

Back (for now)

Hello all. I am getting back online after a brief introduction to fatherhood hiatus. I am reading all my emails and getting back to anyone who wrote me to order, or just for more information. If you don’t hear from me in the next couple days, please forgive me and email me back so I can get your shelf order moving. I will be going into the shop tomorrow to start on a batch.

Many people have asked about sizing for their bikes, as well as how the shelf attaches to the wall. The shelf attaches to the wall by a steel mount I have welded that screws into the wall. For best results, the mount should screw into studs (made for 16″ apart) but should also work with one side in a stud and the other using a drywall screw. If your bike doesn’t fit, we can discuss tweaking the shelf to fit your bike.

Thanks again for all the nice emails/comments/blog posts, etc. This last week has been overwhelming on a couple fronts.

He has arrived…

My son has finally arrived. Born yesterday, everything is great. Super chill and happy. So, if you have emailed me in the last couple days (or in the next), sorry I haven’t replied. I’ll get back to you in a day or two when the storm passes.

This is crazy… In the best way possible.

Bike Shelf

Please go here for the most updated information and purchasing options for The Bike Shelf. This site you are currently on is no longer being updated, there is a new Knife & Saw website

While visiting many friends small apartments here in SF and more so in NY, I noticed that there is a void when it comes to elegant bike management. Bikes always get in the way – either in the hall, leaning up against a wall, in the kitchen and so on. So, I decided to design something to fix that problem. Until I think of a better name, I am calling it the Bike Shelf.

Please go here to purchase.

Making the most of it

There is always good quality scrap laying around the shop that either gets used for jigs or just thrown out so I decided to see what I could do with a pile of Ash that had been laying around for a while. This is the result. Hope you like where it’s headed.

The Lil’zakos Collection

Sorry it has once again been a while since the last post, but I’ve been busy with a few things… most notably getting ready for the arrival of my son. With this, came some new furniture. Please check out the new crib and dresser/changing table I have designed and built for the little man that is on his way. I am thinking of making a couple other things for the room, so stay tuned.

New work… finally

Desk Front

Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been crazy busy both with my own work as well as work for the company I work for. At the beginning of the year, Derek Chen of Council Design was nice enough to take me onto his team and teach me about both the business of furniture design, as well as the technical craft behind the amazing work he puts out. Just recently back from ICFF with Council, I have finally had some down time to finish up some personal projects and make some updates to the site. More will be coming soon, but here is a taste of what I’ve been up to. Hope you like it.

Frames make nice presents

Pine Frames

Whenever I would go get something framed, I was always surprised by how much it costs. You always want to treat nice artwork well and make it last, so framing is of course the next step after you have made, found or purchased a piece. Well, I got sick of paying too much money and decided to just make frames myself. I had all the tools, so why not? I first started by making some frames for myself and then made some for friends and now I am making them for anyone interested.

So, if you are looking for a unique, one of a kind handmade frame to give as a present, or if you are just looking for one yourself, I’m here for you. I can make frames of most any size, with any kind of wood in any color and variety of styles. All frames are handmade and unique, so they will all look a little different. I back all frames and include hanging hardware. If you’re interested, just email me. In the meantime, you can check out some of the frames I have made in the past here.
